oh my god Tommy played guitar, drums and sang
whilst Johnny Hewitt blew up a storm on harmonica, by
the end of their set they were dripping , the audience were
dripping, I had melted...primal rock n roll blues at it's best.

Review: The Blues Duo – Tommy Allen & Johnny Hewitt – at True Blues Club, Earlestown Conservative Club, Newton-le-Willows

Friday, 12th April, 2013

At this premier establishment that is becoming a shrine to the blues genre which attracts top artists from across the Atlantic, it was therefore not that surprising that some home-grown talent would explode on to the scene, and explode they did. Step forward The Blues Duo that is, Tommy Allen and Johnny Hewitt.

They bring to the table the best of authentic Chicago Blues. Tommy on vocals and guitars, kick drum, and snare and Johnny on vocals and blues harmonica, yes it was as basic as that, but the duo just bursting with talent from every pore. The Blues Duo gave a comprehensive master class of blues musicianship that just brought the house down.

With a mix of some original material penned by Tommy Allen and several ‘stomp the dirt’ classics, they managed to hook the audience, including me with their mesmerising artistry, you just had to be there, and if you missed the gig, shame on you. Number after number they pumped it out just enthralling, and it didn’t take long for the audience to applaud, holler, and whistle their appreciation, and that was just the first set but of course the second set was just as brilliant.

The Blues Duo CD entitled ”Live at the Bronte Blues Club” is packed with the blues, as you would expect, this is an absolute must have for your collection and is available from Tommy and Johnny at their gigs. If you like your blues you’ll like The Blues Duo – a 100% satisfaction, nothing less, brilliant.

Blues stars to play at Barry's West End Club.......

4:20pm Wednesday 25th April 2012

TWO of the UK's finest blues musicians – Tommy Allen and Johnny Hewitt – play The West End Club in Barry on Friday, May 4.

Both leaders of their own bands, Tommy and Johnny team up to perform high-octane Chicago Street Style Blues as performed on Maxwell Street, with Tommy on vocals, electric guitar/mandolin and kick drum, and Johnny on vocals and harmonica.

Tommy has toured with Mojo Buford (Muddy Waters Band), Otis Taylor and Big Joe Turner's Blues Caravan as well as supporting the likes of Walter Trout with his own band Trafficker.

Johnny is in the top division of British harmonica players, specialising in Chicago Blues in particular, and has accompanied many touring American acts.

Big festival favourites, this promises to be another great evening in the blues and roots calendar, with support from Michael Parker.

Tickets at £8 are available from Mike on 07882 227537 or from the bar.

Watermelon Slim & Guest Johnny Hewitt........
Watermelon Slim at Goin' Up The Country Blues & Roots Club
                            Worthenbury Saturday March 31st 8pm for 9pm show - £13
with special guest Johnny Hewitt on harmonica
There is so much that can be written about Watermelon Slim from his stint in the Vietnam war to his subsequent protest about its futility - to his multitude of jobs to feed his family - trucker, forklift driver, sawmill worker (where he lost part of a finger), funeral operator and watermelon farmer in Oklahoma (from where he got his moniker).
On top of that, he has two undergraduate degrees and a Masters degree, whilst becoming a member of Mensa!!!
However it is from the blues that he made his name and it can be best described from his website ...
An ever-expanding career of ramshackle grandeur.
Bill "Watermelon Slim" Homans has built a remarkable reputation with his raw, impassioned intensity. HARP Magazine wrote "From sizzling slide guitar...to nitty-gritty harp blowing...to a gruff, resonating Okie twang, Slim delivers acutely personal workingman blues with both hands on the wheel of life, a bottle of hooch in his pocket, and the Bible on the passenger seat." Paste Magazine writes "He's one hell of a bottleneck guitarist, and he's got that cry in his voice that only the greatest singers in the genre have had before him."
This is a gig that you must not miss and as a bonus Johnny Hewitt, the region's top harp player has been invited to Join Slim for some of his set... who knows, they may have a harp blowout!!!
Tickets are going quickly so get back to me asap as this will sellout. We already have people coming from great distances to the gig.
