Review: The Blues Duo – Tommy Allen & Johnny Hewitt – at True Blues Club, Earlestown Conservative Club, Newton-le-Willows

Friday, 12th April, 2013

At this premier establishment that is becoming a shrine to the blues genre which attracts top artists from across the Atlantic, it was therefore not that surprising that some home-grown talent would explode on to the scene, and explode they did. Step forward The Blues Duo that is, Tommy Allen and Johnny Hewitt.

They bring to the table the best of authentic Chicago Blues. Tommy on vocals and guitars, kick drum, and snare and Johnny on vocals and blues harmonica, yes it was as basic as that, but the duo just bursting with talent from every pore. The Blues Duo gave a comprehensive master class of blues musicianship that just brought the house down.

With a mix of some original material penned by Tommy Allen and several ‘stomp the dirt’ classics, they managed to hook the audience, including me with their mesmerising artistry, you just had to be there, and if you missed the gig, shame on you. Number after number they pumped it out just enthralling, and it didn’t take long for the audience to applaud, holler, and whistle their appreciation, and that was just the first set but of course the second set was just as brilliant.

The Blues Duo CD entitled ”Live at the Bronte Blues Club” is packed with the blues, as you would expect, this is an absolute must have for your collection and is available from Tommy and Johnny at their gigs. If you like your blues you’ll like The Blues Duo – a 100% satisfaction, nothing less, brilliant.
